Vijayadashami 2025 – Date, Significance, Rituals, and Cultural Traditions
Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, is a deeply symbolic and widely celebrated festival across India. It marks the ultimate victory of good over evil, celebrated through Lord Rama’s triumph over Ravana and Goddess Durga’s slaying of Mahishasura. Observed on the tenth and final day of Sharad Navratri, this day carries both the power of completion and the blessing of new beginnings. In 2025, Vijayadashami falls on Thursday, 2nd October

Why is Vijayadashami Celebrated?
Rama’s Victory
In many parts of North India, Dussehra honors Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana, representing the triumph of righteousness (dharma) over ego and injustice.
Durga’s Victory
In Shakta traditions, it signifies the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, following nine nights of spiritual struggle observed as Navratri.
New Beginnings
This is one of the most auspicious muhurats of the year to start anything new—education, business, spiritual practices, or personal goals.
Completion of Ayudha and Saraswati Puja
In South India, Vijayadashami concludes the rituals of Ayudha Puja (worship of instruments and tools) and Saraswati Puja, and marks the beginning of Vidyarambham, the sacred initiation into learning.
Main Rituals and Celebrations
Durga Visarjan (Devi Udvasan)
On this day, idols of Goddess Durga are immersed in water bodies across Bengal, Odisha, and Eastern India. The ritual is performed with devotion and emotional farewells, chanting “Asche Bochor Abar Hobe” (Come again next year).
Shastra Puja / Ayudha Puja
In Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, people clean and decorate their tools, books, weapons, and vehicles. These are then worshipped to invoke divine energy in one’s daily duties and profession.
Vidyarambham
In Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Karnataka, small children are introduced to education on this day. Guided by a guru or elder, the child writes sacred syllables like “Om” or “Sri” on rice, slate, or sand while mantras are recited.
Ramlila and Effigy Burning
In North Indian cities and towns, Vijayadashami marks the climax of Ramlila performances. The burning of towering effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnad symbolizes the destruction of evil and arrogance.
Exchange of Apta Leaves
In Maharashtra, people exchange Shami or Apta leaves, representing gold, as a gesture of goodwill and prosperity. Families greet each other with the words “Vijayadashami cha Shubhechha.”
Spiritual Significance of Vijayadashami
