Pradosh Puja Story

Mythological Origins:The Pradosh Vrat is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and is mentioned in scriptures like the Skanda Purana and Shiva Purana. It is associated with an event during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) by the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras).

  • Churning of the Ocean (Samudra Manthan):During the churning, Halahala—a deadly poison—emerged, threatening to destroy all life. Lord Shiva, in his infinite compassion, consumed the poison to save the universe. To prevent the poison from spreading through his body, Goddess Parvati held his throat, turning it blue (Neelkanth). This act of selflessness and divine intervention inspired worship dedicated to Shiva on Trayodashi, symbolizing gratitude and reverence.
  • Nandi’s Role and the Origin of Pradosham:After swallowing the poison, Shiva performed a dance of cosmic balance on the bull, Nandi, during the Pradosh period (the twilight hour). This event marked the sanctity of the Sandhya Kaal (evening) and evolved into the observance of the Pradosh Puja.
