Prabodhini Ekadashi, also known as Devuthani Ekadashi or Dev Uthani Ekadashi, marks the end of Chaturmas, the four-month period when Lord Vishnu is believed to be in yogic sleep (Yoga Nidra).   • Tulsi Vivah, the ceremonial wedding of Tulsi with Vishnu (Shaligram), is also performed on or after this day

Devuthani Ekadashi Vrat and Puja Rituals

Fasting & Purity

  • Observers keep a strict fast, either nirjala (without water) or with limited fruits and milk, depending on health and tradition
  • Grains, onion, garlic, and lentils are strictly avoided from the previous night
  • Tulsi leaves are added to all food and puja offerings

Morning Puja

  • Wake up early, take a bath, and set up a clean altar for Lord Vishnu
  • Place an image or idol of Vishnu, Narayan, or Jagannath with tulsi leaves
  • Offer yellow flowers, incense, fruits, jaggery, sweets, and ghee diya

Evening Traditions

  • Many homes perform Tulsi Vivah, a symbolic wedding of Tulsi plant with Shaligram or Vishnu idol
  • Homes are decorated with mandaps, rangoli, and lamps
  • Devotional songs and bhajans are sung to mark the end of Chaturmas

Parana – Breaking the Fast

  • Performed on Dwadashi morning, after sunrise
  • Break the fast by offering food or donations to a Brahmin, cow, or needy person
