What is the story and significance behind Amalaki Ekadashi?
Amalaki Ekadashi carries great importance and is followed from ancient times. The story of this Ekadashi was told by Sage Vashishtha to the great king Mandhata. In ancient times, there was a city named Vaidik, ruled by the king Chaitra Ratha. Everyone in his kingdom, observed this fast with devotion and stayed awake all night in the temple listening stories of Narayana, on the same night a bird hunter, who had committed many sins was also present in the temple listening to the stories staying awake the entire night. After his death he was reborn as Vasu Ratha, son of Chandravanshi King Vidhu Ratha, as a merit of his single Ekadashi fast.
Vasu Ratha was a very compassionate and righteous man, who performed charity and was devoted to Vishnu. One day he was attacked by Bandits in the forest, the weapons of the Bandits would be destroyed as soon as they hit the king’s body and would appear like flowers to the king. A divine goddess emerged from king’s body and killed all the Bandits, a divine voice came from the sky saying that Paramatma Vishnu himself has protected him.
Significance
Amalaki Ekadashi grants immense joy, destroy sins and gtants divine protection. Observing this fast is equal to donating of thousand cows, Amla is a sacred tree emerged from the mouth of Vishnu. Worshiping this Amla tree has great importance, this fast destroys sins and Amalaki Ekadashi leads to Vaikuntha Dham.
How to observe Amalaki Ekadashi?
Amalaki Ekadashi can be observed by waking up early in the morning and taking a holy bath, observe a complete Nirjala fast or a simple fast by avoiding grains, light a ghee diya in front of Tulsi and in front of Vishnu image or Idol, offer Panchamrit, fruits, flowers, Tulsi leaves and incense, also express gratitude to Sacred Amla tree, worship the tree as a divine grace of Vishnu, recite prayers like, Vishnu Sahasranama or chant ॐनमोभगवतेवासुदेवाय , sing bhajans or read scriptures like Ramayana, Bhagwat Geeta, perform Jagaran, avoid negative emotions and indulge in Charitable acts and Bhakti.
