Saphala Ekadashi 2025 – Day, Date & Timing

The day of dedication, devotion, and self-purification—this is what Ekadashi truly stands for, a time to allow our hearts to sink in the devotion of Vishnu. Falling on the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight and celebrated twice every month, there are twenty-four Ekadashis, each having its own importance.

Have you ever wondered which Ekadashi brings success in our life? The Ekadashi that blesses us with fortune is Saphala Ekadashi. “Saphala” means fruitful, and it is believed that praying and fasting to Vishnu can bring positive outcomes.

Saphala Ekadashi 2025 – Day, Date & Timing

In 2025, Saphala Ekadashi will be observed on Monday, December 15. It comes in Krishna Paksha, which is before the Amavasya in the Pausha month. The Ekadashi tithi begins at 6:49 PM on December 14 and ends at 9:19 PM on December 15.

Story behind Saphala Ekadashi and its significance

Every Ekadashi has a story behind it, and Saphala Ekadashi is no exception. The tale talks about how Vishnu’s blessing transformed a wrongdoer into a noble king.

The tale begins with a king named Mahishmat, who was the ruler of Champavati. He had five sons, among whom the eldest, Lumbhak, was very wicked. He disrespected elders, sages, devotees, and even the Gods. Due to his deeds, he was banished from his kingdom by his father. Lumbhak then started living in a deep forest, where he engaged in robbery.

In the same forest, there was an old Peepal tree, considered very sacred. Lumbhak consumed meat and fruits, but one day, unknowingly, he consumed only fruits and water under the Peepal tree and did not sleep the entire night. Before eating the fruit, he offered it to Vishnu. The day when Lumbhak did this was Saphala Ekadashi. Pleased with him, Vishnu blessed him that he would regain his capital and have a righteous son.

Lumbhak left the wrong path and became a devotee of Vishnu. He got his kingdom back and was blessed with a son named Manoj. Lumbhak ruled for fifteen years, and later his son was crowned king. After some years, he passed away and went to Vaikuntha.

Significance
Saphala Ekadashi is special; it not only gives success but also brings one closer to Vishnu, helping us seek his guidance and protection.

Ways to observe this Ekadashi

Krishna had once said to Yudhishthira, “I am not as pleased even by great sacrifices and yajnas, offered with rich donations, as I am pleased by the simple observance of an Ekadashi fast.” On this Ekadashi, one should worship Narayana with faith, love, and devotion. Devotees should offer him coconut, betel nuts, lemon, pomegranate, amla, cloves, ber, and mango fruits. On this day, one should perform Deep Daan (donation of lamps) and spend the night in Jagran with Vaishnav devotees or listening to bhajans and kirtans. The results of this awakening are so great that even a thousand years of penance cannot compare.

Poojas done during Saphala Ekadashi

  • Satyanarayana Pooja: Performing the Satyanarayana Katha, in the evening or on Dwadashi after breaking the fast, brings blessings of peace, prosperity, and harmony in one’s life and family.
  • Vishnu Sahasranama Archana / Puja: Performing Abhishekh of Shaligram, or Vishnu/Krishna with proper rituals and chanting of Vishnu Sahasranama (1000 names of Vishnu) while offering Tulsi leaves on each name removes sins, destroys bad karma, brings peace, and helps one seek Vishnu’s blessings.
