UpanayanamUpanayanam
Upanayanam, also known as the Sacred Thread Ceremony or Yajnopaveeta Dharana, is a highly revered samskara in Hindu dharma, especially among Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas. In Telugu culture, this ceremony marks the spiritual rebirth of a boy—his initiation into Brahmacharya Avastha, where he becomes eligible to study the Vedas and perform Vedic duties

The Upanayanam Ceremony marks a significant turning point in a boy’s life, symbolizing his spiritual birth and readiness to pursue knowledge, discipline, and dharma. In Telugu Brahmin households, this rite of passage is performed with deep reverence to initiate the child into Vedic learning.
When Is Upanayanam Performed?
- Ideally performed when the boy turns 8 years old
- Muhurtham is selected based on the Janma Nakshatra of the boy and parents
- Conducted on an auspicious date as per Telugu Panchangam
Rituals Involved in Upanayanam
- Vighneshwara Pooja – to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha
- Punyaha Vachanam & Maha Sankalpam – for sanctification
- Kalasha Pooja & Udaka Shanti – purification rituals for spiritual readiness
- Yajnopaveetam Dharanam – placing the sacred thread (Janeu) on the boy’s left shoulder
- Homam – invoking the blessings of Vedic deities
- Gayatri Mantra Upadesham – the boy receives the sacred mantra from the Guru or father, initiating him into the path of dharma and knowledge
After this ceremony, the boy enters Brahmacharya Ashrama, beginning his journey of discipline, learning, and spiritual growth.
Symbolism of the Sacred Thread (Yajnopaveetam)
- Three strands symbolize:
- Rishi Rinam (debt to teachers)
- Pitru Rinam (debt to ancestors and parents)
- Deva Rinam (debt to the divine)
- Also represents Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—the forces of creation, preservation, and transformation
Benefits of Performing Upanayanam
- Enables initiation into Vedic studies and sacred rituals
- Protects the child from negative energies and worldly distractions
- Strengthens the bond between Guru, disciple, and family tradition
- Encourages a life of purpose, discipline, and devotion to Dharma
About the ePuja
Only Live ePuja is Possible
The Upanayanam ceremony requires the boy’s physical presence to:
- Wear the Janeu under guidance
- Receive the Gayatri Mantra in person
- Participate in homams, kalasha rituals, and seek family blessings
As such, recorded versions are not feasible. The ceremony can only be performed live with full family involvement and ritual purity.
