This sacred ritual is part of a householder’s duty (Kartha) as prescribed in the Yajurveda and Smriti texts. Tharpanam is a symbolic offering of water and sesame to satisfy and honor departed ancestors, ensuring their peace and blessings for the living family.

Tharpanam Procedure

  • Must be performed wearing dry traditional clothes, not freshly bathed wet clothes
  • Use of copper or silver vessels for offering water
  • Black sesame seeds mixed in water are offered using palms (no spoons or drops)
  • Face East or South during the ritual
  • Involves Sankalpam, mantra chanting, and Tarpana kriya for specific ancestors
  • Can be done at home or under the guidance of a trained Tamil Vadhyar
