Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, is beloved across traditions and worshiped in various forms as Vinayagar, Pillaiyar, Vighneshwara, and Ganapathi.
Purpose and Spiritual Significance
Ganapathi Pooja is conducted to remove Vighnas (obstacles) in any area of life—personal, professional, or spiritual. It is also considered the first pooja to be done before any major ritual or life milestone, as prescribed in Vedic scriptures. His grace ensures that the rest of the efforts are fruitful, uninterrupted, and auspicious.
Lord Ganesha blesses his devotees with intelligence (buddhi), wisdom (viveka), and clarity (jnana).
Ritual Procedure
- The pooja starts with invocation of Lord Ganesha using Vedic mantras
- A Ganapathi Yantra or idol is placed at the altar
- The priest performs Ashtadravya Ganapathi Pooja with eight sacred items including jaggery, ghee, banana, durva grass, coconut, honey, sugarcane, and modak
- Durva (Doob) grass, one of Lord Ganesha’s favorites, is offered in odd numbers
- 108 names (Ashtothram) and Ganapathi Atharvasheersham are recited
- The ritual concludes with aarti, prasadam, and blessings
In some cases, a Ganapathi Homam or Sankatahara Chaturthi Vratam is included for added spiritual benefit.
When to Perform Ganapathi Pooja?
- Ideally performed during the Brahma Muhurta (4:30 am – 6:00 am)
- Can also be performed during any shubha muhurtham, festival day, or beginning of any new initiative
- The date and time are chosen based on Janma Nakshatra, Yoga, and Tithi
Our Tamil Vadhyars help choose the best muhurtham for your purpose—be it family, business, or spiritual goal.
