Dhanishta Panchakam ShantiDhanishta Panchakam Shanti
Dhanishta Panchakam Shanti is a mandatory Vedic ritual that must be performed when a person passes away under any of the following five nakshatras: Dhanishta, Satabhisha, Poorvabhadrapada, Uttarabhadrapada, Revathi. As per scriptures, these nakshatras fall under Panchaka Dosha, which can lead to untimely or sudden deaths in the family if not properly addressed. Performing this Shanti ritual ensures peace to the departed soul and protects the immediate family from similar fate.

The Dhanishta Panchakam period is considered highly inauspicious for death in Tamil and South Indian traditions. If someone passes away during this period, Shastra mandates a special Shanti to be performed to protect the family from further misfortunes.
When to Perform Dhanishta Panchakam Shanti?
This Shanti should be performed:
- After the 15th day from the date of death
- Ideally within 3 months
- Before the 6th month at the latest
Failure to perform this ritual may increase the risk of sudden illnesses or deaths in the family, as warned in traditional scriptures.
Ritual Procedure
The full-day ritual includes:
- Ganapathi Pooja
- Navagraha Pooja
- Kula Devata Pooja
- Kalasha Sthapana and Avahanam
- Sodasaupachara Pooja
- Rudrabhishekam
- Nakshatra Japam (specific to the nakshatra of the deceased)
- Navagraha Japam
