Annaprasana

Annaprasana, also known as “Choroonu” or “First Feeding”, is a sacred ceremony marking the baby’s first intake of solid food. In Tamil culture, it is a deeply meaningful rite, expressing gratitude to the Divine for nurturing the child to this milestone. This ritual is considered a major turning point in the baby's early development, shifting from liquid food (milk) to solid food (usually rice or payasam).

In Tamil tradition, Annaprasana (அன்னபிரசன) is a cherished samskara that marks a baby’s first intake of solid food, usually rice. The word itself comes from Sanskrit:

  • Anna = food (especially cooked rice)
  • Prasana = to eat

This ritual purifies the act of eating and invokes divine and ancestral blessings for the child’s health, growth, and digestion.

When to Perform Annaprasana

As per Tamil customs, Annaprasana is ideally performed:

  • During the baby’s 6th or 7th month, depending on growth and health
  • On an auspicious muhurtham based on Janma Nakshatra, tithi, and yoga
  • With guidance from a Vedic astrologer or Tamil Vadhyar

Our team will assist you in selecting the most suitable date for your child.

Ritual Procedure (Tamil Vedic Tradition)

  • Ganapathi Pooja – Begins with invoking Ganesha for a smooth ritual
  • Family Sankalpam – Naming the baby and purpose of the ritual
  • Mantra Chanting – For digestion, immunity, and overall health
  • First Feeding (Annaprasana)
    • Nei Saadham (ghee rice) or Payasam (sweet milk rice) is first offered to the deity
    • The parent or grandparent then feeds a small portion to the child
    • Elders symbolically feed and bless the child for long life and good health

The child is bathed and dressed in traditional attire:

  • Girls – Pattu pavadai
  • Boys – Veshti and sattai

The environment is decorated with banana stems, kolam, kalashas, and flowers to uphold Tamil tradition.

Benefits of Annaprasana

  • Strengthens the child’s digestive system and energy field
  • Introduces food with devotion, protection, and purity
  • Seeks ancestral and divine blessings for health and vitality
  • Encourages spiritual alignment even in early habits like eating
