AnnaprasanaAnnaprasana
Annaprasana, also known as “Choroonu” or “First Feeding”, is a sacred ceremony marking the baby’s first intake of solid food. In Tamil culture, it is a deeply meaningful rite, expressing gratitude to the Divine for nurturing the child to this milestone. This ritual is considered a major turning point in the baby's early development, shifting from liquid food (milk) to solid food (usually rice or payasam).

The word "Annaprasana" comes from Sanskrit:
- Anna means food (specifically cooked rice)
- Prasana means to eat
Ritual Significance and Process
On the day of the ceremony, the baby is bathed, dressed in traditional attire, and seated on the lap of a parent or grandparent. The Tamil Vadhyar begins the ritual with a Ganapathi Puja and family sankalpam, followed by chanting of mantras for health, digestion, and well-being.
A small quantity of Nei Saadham (ghee rice) or Payasam (milk-based sweet rice) is offered to the baby. This food is first placed before the deity and then fed to the child with devotion.
Family elders also symbolically feed the baby a small amount, offering blessings for a long, healthy, and prosperous life.
When to Perform Annaprasana?
In Tamil customs, the ideal time is when the baby is in its:
- 6th or 7th month, depending on health and development
- Date should be matched with the child’s Janma Nakshatra
- Should fall on an auspicious thithi and yoga, as determined by a Vedic astrologer or priest
Our Vadhyars can help identify the right muhurtham for your child.
