Why Ritu Shanti is Performed
According to Shastra, the body and environment undergo subtle changes when a girl reaches puberty. Hence, rituals are performed to cleanse and protect her from any spiritual doshas or planetary imbalances.
If any Ritu Dosham is identified based on the time and nakshatra, then Bhuvaneshwari Shanti Homam, along with Navagraha and Nakshatra Shanti, is also performed.
Ritual Process
- The ritual starts with Ganapathi Pooja to remove obstacles
- Kalasha Sthapanam and Kalasha Pooja is performed with mantra chanting
- Punyahavachanam (ritual purification) is conducted to energize the surroundings
- Prokshanam (sprinkling of sanctified water) is done on the girl to purify her body and mind
- If dosham is present, Bhuvaneshwari Homam, Navagraha Homam, and Nakshatra Shanti are performed
- The girl receives blessings from elders and wears traditional half-saree or pattu pavadai
When to Perform Ritu Shanti?
- Traditionally performed on the 11th day from the onset of puberty
- In some Tamil communities, it is performed on the 5th day
- Muhurtham can be fixed by a Vedic astrologer based on Janma Nakshatra and time of Ritu Kala
