In Tamil homes, this ceremony is performed with devotion, gratitude, and joy—inviting friends and family to witness the child’s first spiritual milestone.
Significance of Naamakaranam
A name is more than an identity. In Hindu belief, it carries energy, vibration, and destiny. The Naamakaranam ritual seeks the Lord’s permission to give the child a name that blesses them with fame, strength, prosperity, and longevity.
This ritual ensures that the child’s name is aligned with the cosmic energies they are born with.
Ritual Procedure
- Punyahavachanam is performed to purify the baby and home environment
- Jathakarma Samskara is done to welcome the baby into society and culture
- A Vedic Vadhyar whispers the chosen name into the baby’s right ear while chanting mantras
- Family elders bless the child, and the baby is placed in a cradle (optional, based on tradition)
- The name chanted during the ceremony becomes the child’s official Hindu name used for future Sankalpas and rituals
When to Perform Naamakaranam?
- Ideally performed on the 11th day after birth
- Can also be done on any auspicious day or muhurtham based on Janma Nakshatra
- Morning hours are preferred for performing the ceremony
Our experienced Vadhyars can help you select the most suitable date and time based on Tamil Panchangam.
