The word “Dasha” means ten, and “Dhanam” means donation. In this ritual, ten sacred items are offered in charity to deserving Brahmins, accompanied by a specific pooja. This offering helps wash away sins and eases the soul’s journey through Yama Loka.

Why Perform Dasha Dhanam?

According to Mahabharata, Dhanam (donation) is the only companion of a soul after death. The ten items donated are symbolic and represent the five elements, purity of speech, thought, and action, and release from karmic baggage.

It is typically performed:

  • On the day of death (as part of Anthyesti)
  • On the 10th or 11th day ritual (Shraddham)
  • As a remedial ritual for those suffering from Pithru Dosha

The Ten Dhanams in Tamil Tradition

  1. Bhoomi (Land) – Symbolically represented by a sandalwood stick. Offers relief from Brahmahathya Dosha.
  2. Tila (Sesame Seeds) – Removes sins of speech, thought, and deed.
  3. Swarnam (Gold) – Satisfies all the Devas and removes suffering in Yama Loka.
  4. Ghee – Offered to please the celestial beings (Devas).
  5. Vastra (Cloth) – Frees the soul from the fear of Yamadutas.
  6. Dhanya (Grains/Rice) – Protects from harsh gatekeepers of the afterlife.
  7. Sharkara (Jaggery) – Ensures a smooth journey to Uttama Lokas (Higher Worlds).
  8. Rajatha (Silver) – Removes negative karmas and helps attain heavenly realms.
  9. Lavana (Salt) – Frees one from fear and mental turbulence.
  10. Go-Dhanam (Cow Donation) – The most sacred, helps the soul cross all Narakas (hells) safely.

How is Dasha Dhanam Performed?

  • A Vedic Pandit (Tamil Vadhyar) performs Ganapathi pooja and Sankalpam
  • The ten symbolic items are purified and placed in front of the kalasha or deity
  • Mantras from Yajur Veda are chanted
  • The dhanams are offered to qualified Brahmins, usually one or two are present
  • The cow donation is often substituted with a symbolic bronze or silver idol or gho-grasa (cow fodder)
