Shradh Ceremony – Honor Your Ancestors with Devotion
The Shradh ceremony is a sacred ritual in Hindu tradition performed to honor one's ancestors and ensure peace for their departed souls. It expresses gratitude and fulfills the karmic duties toward forefathers.
Types of Shradh Rituals
- Hiranya Shradh – A simplified version involving Tarpan, Pinda Daan, and Brahman Bhojan.
- Shradh with Havan – Includes fire rituals (Havan) for purification, invoking divine blessings and deeper ancestral connection.
Significance of Shradh Ceremony
- Performed annually on the same Tithi (lunar day) of the ancestor’s death.
- Helps in fulfilling Pitru Rina (ancestral debt) and receiving their blessings.

Shradh Ceremony Procedure
- Vishwadev Sthapana Pujan – Invoking Vishwadev, the universal deity, to witness the ritual.
- Pinda Pradan – Offering rice balls mixed with ghee, curd, honey, sugar, and milk to nourish ancestral spirits.
- Tarpan – Offering water mixed with black sesame seeds for peace and contentment of the ancestors.
- Brahman Bhojan – Feeding Brahmins is considered equivalent to feeding the ancestors themselves.
Duration: The entire ceremony takes approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on ritual selection.
