Significance of Asthi Visarjan (Live ePuja Only)

In Hindu tradition, Asthi Visarjan is one of the most crucial final rites. It involves the immersion of the ashes (Asthi) of a departed soul into sacred rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, or Triveni Sangam. According to scriptures, this act helps the soul detach from earthly bonds and move towards Moksha (liberation).

If not performed properly and on time, it is believed that the soul remains in turmoil. Asthi Visarjan, conducted with devotion and Vedic rituals, ensures spiritual peace for the departed and blessings for the family.

Procedure for Asthi Visarjan

1. Collection of Asthi (Ashes and Bone Fragments):
The ashes are collected from the cremation site, typically on the same day or on the 3rd, 7th, or 9th day after cremation.
They are respectfully stored in a mud pot (Kalash) or a clean white cloth.

2. Choosing the Sacred River:
Asthi Visarjan is performed at holy rivers such as:

  • Ganga (Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj)
  • Yamuna
  • Kaveri
  • Narmada
  • Godavari
  • Triveni Sangam (Prayagraj)

3. Performing the Rituals:

  • A Vedic Pandit performs a short puja with mantra chanting and sankalpa (intention) for the departed soul.
  • The ashes are then immersed slowly in the flowing river while offering flowers and prayers.

4. Tarpan & Pind Daan (Optional):
These follow-up rituals are performed to seek blessings from ancestors and aid the soul’s peaceful journey.

Best Time to Perform Asthi Visarjan

  • Ideally within 10 days of cremation.
  • The 3rd day is considered the most auspicious for collecting ashes.
  • If delayed, perform it during Pitru Paksha, Amavasya, or within a year of the cremation.

Benefits of Asthi Visarjan

  • Grants peace and liberation to the departed soul.
  • Reduces the effects of Pitru Dosha in the family.
  • Invokes ancestral blessings for harmony and prosperity.
  • Helps the grieving family spiritually release their loved one with dignity.
