Asthi Visarjan

Significance of Asthi Visarjan

  • According to Hindu scriptures, immersing the ashes (Asthi) in sacred rivers helps the soul attain salvation and move towards peace.
  • If Asthi Visarjan is not performed as per Vedic traditions, it is believed that the soul remains unsettled.
  • Performing this ritual seeks the blessings of ancestors and helps in ensuring prosperity for future generations.

Procedure for Asthi Visarjan

  1. Collection of Asthi (Ashes & Bone Fragments):
    • After cremation, the remains of the deceased are collected either on the same day or on the 3rd, 7th, or 9th day.
    • These remains are tied in a piece of cloth or stored in a mud pot (Kalash).
  2. Choosing the Sacred Water Body:
    • The ashes are immersed in a sacred river, such as Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Kaveri, Narmada, or Triveni Sangam.
  3. Performing the Rituals:
    • A Pandit performs a small puja before the immersion, chanting Vedic mantras for the peace of the departed soul.
    • The ashes are then slowly immersed in the flowing water while offering flowers and prayers.
  4. Tarpan and Pind Daan:
    • After the immersion, Tarpan (offering water to ancestors) and Pind Daan can be performed for the ultimate peace of the soul.

Best Time to Perform Asthi Visarjan

  • Asthi Visarjan should ideally be performed before the 10th day after cremation.
  • The 3rd day after cremation is considered the most auspicious for collecting Asthi.
  • If not possible earlier, it must be done within a year, preferably during Pitru Paksha or on Amavasya (new moon day).

Benefits of Asthi Visarjan

  • Ensures the departed soul attains peace and liberation (Moksha).
  • Removes Pitru Dosha and seeks ancestral blessings for the family.
  • Brings spiritual and material prosperity to the family of the deceased.
