This ritual is performed when the baby eats solid food for the first time, traditionally on the 6th or 7th month of the baby’s life, with great devotion and family celebration.
Procedure of Choroonu Pooja (Malayalam Tradition)
In the Malayalam style, the baby wears Kasavu mundu, a sandal-colored dress with golden zari borders. The baby is then placed on the lap of their uncle (paternal or maternal).
The priest performs the following steps:
- Blessing with Sandal Paste: The priest applies sandal paste, tulsi leaves, and flowers on the baby.
- Feeding with Solid Food: The uncle first feeds the baby, followed by the parents and other close family members.
- Food Options for Feeding:
- Sweet Rice (made with brown rice, salt, and jaggery)
- Kheer (made with oats, jaggery, ghee, and rice)
- Banana
The food is traditionally prepared by the mother or grandmother and served in a silver vessel.
