What Happens During Punyahavachanam?

The ritual begins with a Ganapathi Pooja to remove any obstacles, followed by the Kalasha Pooja where a sacred pot is invoked with divine energy using Vedic mantras. Special emphasis is placed on chanting mantras to energize the water, which is later used for prokshanam (sprinkling of holy water) throughout the house.

The priest sprinkles this sacred water on:

  • The newborn baby or the girl (in case of puberty)
  • The parents and family members
  • All rooms and areas of the home

This process symbolizes cleansing, protection, and the beginning of auspicious activities in the household.

When to Perform Punyahavachanam?

  • Traditionally performed on the 11th day after childbirth or puberty
  • A suitable muhurta (auspicious time) can be selected based on the family’s Nakshatra and panchanga

Benefits of Punyahavachanam:

  • Purifies the home after major life events
  • Protects the newborn or young girl from negative energies and drishti (evil eye)
  • Prepares the house for any upcoming auspicious functions
  • Restores spiritual balance in the household

More Information:

  • Includes Ganapathi Pooja, Kalasha Sthapana, and Prokshanam
  • Usually performed at home under the guidance of a well-versed pandit
