Uttara Kriya Rituals and Their Importance

Immediately After Death

  • A Vedic Purohit, trained in Apara Kriya, is called to perform essential rituals at home.
  • Last rites are performed at the cremation ground with Homa, mantra chanting, and daan (donations).
  • Cremation is done either with traditional wood or through electric methods, based on family preference.

Collection of Asthi (Ashes)

  • Asthi (ashes) are collected on the 2nd or 3rd day.
  • These are immersed in sacred rivers like Ganga, Kaveri, or Godavari, as per family custom.

Nitya Karma (Day 3 to Day 9)

  • Daily poojas are performed to guide the soul’s peaceful journey.
  • Pitru Tarpana and Brahmana Bhojana are conducted for purification and blessings.

10th Day – Shanti Homam & Gnati Tarpanam

  • Homam and Tarpanam are done to cleanse ancestral ties and invoke peace.

11th Day – Rudra Japam & Shraddha

  • Rudra Japam is chanted by 4 to 11 priests.
  • Ekodishta Shraddha and Shodasha Kumbha Shraddha are performed.

12th Day – Sapindi Karana Shraddha

  • A critical ritual where the soul joins Pitru Loka (ancestral realm).
  • Donations and prayers are offered to complete the transition.

13th Day – Masika Shraddha

  • First monthly shraddha is performed.
  • Sets the tradition for annual shraddhas and remembrance.

14th Day – Vaikunta Samaradhana

  • A grand ritual ensuring eternal peace (Vaikunta Prapti) of the departed soul.
  • Includes Parayanam, danam, and Brahmin feeding.
