What is Pitru Dosha Nivarana Puja?

Pitru Dosha Nivarana Puja is a sacred Hindu ritual performed to appease ancestors and neutralize the effects of Pitru Dosha. Pitru Dosha occurs when the souls of deceased ancestors are not at peace due to improper last rites or unfulfilled obligations. This dosha can create obstacles in one’s life, affecting family harmony, financial growth, career progress, and overall well-being.

This puja is typically performed during Shradha ceremonies or on auspicious days such as Amavasya (New Moon), Mahalaya Paksha, or on the death anniversaries of deceased parents and ancestors. It involves offerings such as water (Tarpana), sesame seeds, cooked food, and prayers to invoke blessings and forgiveness from the ancestors.

When to Perform Pitru Dosha Nivarana Puja?

  • If Ketu is positioned in the first house or the fifth house in an individual’s birth chart, it indicates complete Pitru Dosha, requiring remedial rituals.
  • If a person has passed away under specific Nakshatras such as Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purvabhadra, Uttarabhadra, and Revathi, it is advised to leave the house vacant for five months and perform Pitru Dosha Puja.
  • If death occurs in Tripada Nakshatras such as Krutika, Punarvasu, Uttara, Vishakha, and Uttarashadha, the house should be left vacant for three months, and rituals should be conducted to pacify the departed soul.

Effects and Causes of Pitru Dosha

Pitru Dosha can manifest in different ways, leading to:

  • Property disputes among siblings, causing discord and legal battles.
  • Delays in marriage or repeated obstacles in family life.
  • Hindrances in career and financial instability despite hard work.
  • Health issues and recurring misfortunes within the family.
  • Incomplete tasks and failures, even with the best efforts.

Remedies for Pitru Dosha

To remove Pitru Dosha and ensure peace for the departed souls, the following rituals are performed:

  1. Performing Ancestral Rituals at Sacred Places – Conducting last rites or special pujas in places like Srirangapatna, Kashi, Gaya, Rameshwaram, and Tryambakeshwar is considered highly beneficial.
  2. Pretha Samskara – Special purification rituals for departed souls.
  3. Narayana Bali Puja – A ritual that includes Pinda Pradan (offering rice balls) to ancestors, helping them attain liberation.
  4. Pitru Dosha Nivarana Ganapathi Puja – Performed to remove planetary afflictions related to ancestors.
  5. Swayampaka Dana (Feeding Brahmins) – Donating 10 essential items known as Dasha Dhana (umbrella, mat, slippers, iron bowl, cotton, black sesame, oil, ghee, and gold or silver) to Brahmins.
  6. Gho Pooja (Cow Worship) – Feeding and donating cows helps in nullifying Pitru Dosha.
  7. Offering Rice and Sesame to Crows – Crows are believed to be messengers of ancestors; feeding them symbolizes pleasing the departed souls.
