Importance of Marriage Ceremony
In Hinduism, marriage is more than just a union of two people. It is a sacred commitment encompassing love, respect, patience, and harmony. The rituals performed during the marriage ceremony invite divine energies to bless the couple, while the holy fire (Agni) acts as the eternal witness to their union.
Key Rituals of Kannada Marriage Ceremony
A traditional Kannada marriage consists of many rituals performed meticulously to seek divine blessings:
1. Ganapati Puja
- Performed to invoke Lord Ganesha, removing obstacles and bringing good fortune to the couple.
2. Gowri Puja
- Conducted by the bride to seek the blessings of Goddess Gowri for marital harmony and prosperity.
3. Kashi Yatra
- Symbolizes the groom's readiness for marriage and responsibility. The groom humorously expresses a desire to renounce worldly life, but the bride’s father persuades him to embrace household life.
4. Antarpat Ceremony
- A cloth is held between the bride and groom before exchanging garlands, signifying the removal of barriers as they come together.
5. Mangalyadharana
- The groom ties the sacred Mangalsutra around the bride's neck, symbolizing commitment, protection, and eternal union.
6. Saptapadi
- The couple takes seven sacred steps around the holy fire, promising each other companionship, mutual respect, and lifelong support.
7. Ashirvada
- Elders and relatives shower the couple with blessings for a prosperous and harmonious married life.
Benefits of Performing Kalyana Puja
- Strengthens the bond between bride and groom spiritually and emotionally.

- Establishes a strong spiritual foundation for married life.
