Significance of Holika Puja
The festival of Holika Dahan originates from Prahlad’s devotion to Lord Vishnu and his triumph over his father, the demon king Hiranyakashipu, and his evil sister Holika.
- Hiranyakashipu, an enemy of Lord Vishnu, was angered by his son Prahlad’s devotion.
- He commanded his sister Holika, who had a boon of being immune to fire, to sit with Prahlad in a blazing pyre, intending to kill him.
- By divine grace, Prahlad remained unharmed, and Holika was burned to ashes, symbolizing the victory of devotion, righteousness, and good over evil.
- This burning of Holika’s effigy is known as Holika Dahan, performed to remove negativity and invite positivity into one’s life.
When to Perform Holika Puja?
- Holika Puja is performed on Phalgun Shukla Poornima, the day before Holi.
- The auspicious muhurat for Holika Dahan is determined based on planetary alignments.
- It is conducted in the evening, just after sunset, before playing Holi the next day (Dhulandi).
Holika Puja Vidhi (Procedure)
- Kalash Sthapana – Establishing a sacred pot to invoke divine energy.
- Ganesh & Gauri Puja – Seeking blessings from Lord Ganesha & Goddess Gauri.
- Holika Worship – A firewood structure is placed, and devotees perform rituals with kumkum, turmeric, flowers, raw cotton, coconut, wheat, and jaggery.
- Puja Sankalp & Mantra Chanting – Reciting Vedic mantras for Holika Devi, praying for the removal of negative energies.
- Holika Dahan – The lighting of the bonfire, signifying the destruction of evil.
- Parikrama (Circumambulation) – Devotees take three to five rounds around the fire, praying for prosperity and happiness.
