Gaya is regarded in the Garuda Purana, Vayu Purana and Ramayana as the most sacred place on earth for ancestral rites. According to tradition, Lord Vishnu himself resides here as Pitru Devta at the Vishnupad Temple, and rites offered at Gaya bring peace and liberation to departed souls. Lord Rama and Mata Sita are also believed to have performed ancestral rites for King Dasharatha on the banks of the Falgu River.

Pitru Paksha 2026 runs from 26/27 September to Sarva Pitru Amavasya on Saturday 10 October 2026, the most auspicious time of the year to offer Tarpan to one's ancestors.

Tarpan is the offering of water mixed with black sesame and kusha to satisfy and honour the departed souls of the family.
