Tulsi Vivah 2026: Why Did Lord Vishnu Marry a Plant?

Tulsi Vivah 2026 falls on Saturday, November 21. This blog traces the origin of the ritual to the Padma Purana, where a devoted woman named Vrinda cursed Lord Vishnu himself, and from her sacrifice, the Tulsi plant was born. It covers the complete puja vidhi step by step, the full samagri list, what the ritual spiritually means for your home.

In millions of Indian homes, there is a plant that is watered before anyone eats breakfast, garlanded on festival mornings, and never plucked after sunset. A plant that is offered to Lord Vishnu before any puja is considered complete. A plant whose leaves, the Padma Purana says, can purify even the most impure offering the moment they touch it.

That plant is Tulsi. And every year, on the Dwadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha, she is married to Lord Vishnu with the same ceremony, the same rituals, and the same devotion as a daughter being given away in Kanyadaan.

Tulsi Vivah 2026 falls on Saturday, November 21.

If you have ever stood before a Tulsi plant with a small diya in your hand and wondered how this tradition began, this is that story.

Who Was Tulsi?

Tulsi was not always a plant.

According to the Padma Purana, she was once a woman named Vrinda, devoted, learned, and completely surrendered to her husband, the demon king Jalandhar.

Jalandhar was born from the ocean and carried immense power. But his invincibility had one source and one source alone: his wife's chastity. As long as Vrinda's devotion to her husband remained unbroken, no force in the three worlds could defeat Jalandhar, not even the devas.

The gods appealed to Lord Vishnu. And Vishnu, to protect dharma, did something that would cost him dearly.

He took the form of Jalandhar and approached Vrinda.

When Vrinda realised she had been deceived, that the man before her was not her husband but Lord Vishnu in disguise, her grief turned to fury. She cursed Vishnu directly. “You have broken what was most sacred. You will become a stone”.

That curse is why the Shaligram, the black river stone worshipped in Vaishnava homes as Lord Vishnu himself, exists.

Vrinda then gave up her life. From the ashes of her body, a plant rose from the earth.

The Tulsi plant.

Lord Vishnu, moved by the depth of her devotion and the weight of what had occurred, made a promise. He would marry her, every year, in every home that honoured her, for as long as the world endured.

That promise is Tulsi Vivah.

What Does Tulsi Vivah Mark in the Hindu Calendar?

Tulsi Vivah falls at the end of Chaturmas, the four-month period during which Lord Vishnu rests in Ksheer Sagar. During these four months, no weddings, no sacred thread ceremonies, no Griha Pravesh pujas are performed.

When Lord Vishnu awakens on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, all auspicious activities resume. The wedding season in India begins the morning after Tulsi Vivah. Every shaadi that happens between November and February exists, in a way, because Tulsi was married first.

Couples who do not have a girl child are advised to perform Tulsi Vivah at least once in their lifetime to earn the spiritual merit of Kanyadaan

What Tulsi Vivah Means for Your Home

The Padma Purana makes a specific statement about homes where Tulsi is worshipped, that poverty, illness, and misfortune cannot enter a household where the Tulsi plant is tended with daily devotion.

The Tulsi plant (Ocimum tenuiflorum), has over forty documented medicinal properties in Ayurvedic literature. It purifies the surrounding air, repels insects, and has antibacterial properties confirmed in modern research.

How to Perform Tulsi Vivah Puja at Home in 2026

Morning of Tulsi Vivah: Wake during Brahma Muhurat if possible. Bathe the Tulsi plant with clean water and wipe the pot. Clean the surrounding area and draw a small rangoli around the base.

Setting Up the Mandap: Place four sugarcane stalks around the Tulsi pot to form a small Vivah mandap. Decorate with flowers and mango leaves.

Dressing Tulsi as the Bride: Drape the red chunri around the plant. Place glass bangles at the base. Apply a small dot of sindoor. She is dressed as a bride.

Placing the Groom: Set the Shaligram stone or Vishnu idol beside the Tulsi plant. Offer him fresh flowers, sandal paste, and a clean cloth.

The Kanyadaan: The eldest woman in the family, or the woman of the house, performs the symbolic Kanyadaan, placing her hand over the Tulsi plant and offering her to Lord Vishnu.

Mangalsutra and Saat Phere: Tie the mangalsutra thread around the Tulsi plant. Some families walk around the Tulsi pot seven times, just as a bride and groom circle the sacred fire.

Aarti and Prasad: Sing the Tulsi Aarti. Offer mishri, amla, and sweets as prasad. Distribute to all family members present.
