Navagraha Havan Complete Guide: Rituals, Benefits & Packages
Navagraha Havan is a Vedic fire ritual performed to pacify all nine planetary forces and reduce the doshas they create in a person's birth chart. This complete guide covers what the ritual addresses, who should perform it, the auspicious timing, a verified nine-step ritual breakdown, and the full samagri checklist.
Every person experiences periods in life when nothing seems to move. A career that stalls despite full effort. A marriage that keeps getting delayed. Finances that stay unstable regardless of hard work. Health that refuses to fully recover. In Vedic astrology, these persistent patterns are rarely coincidental, they often trace back to an imbalance among the nine planetary forces governing your life.
The remedy is the Navagraha Havan.
What Is Navagraha Havan?
The word Nava means nine and Graha means planets. The Navagraha Havan is performed to reduce the negative effects of the nine planets and pacify them, attracting their positive energies for a better life.
The nine planets: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu, and Ketu, govern every major aspect of human life. Career, health, relationships, wealth, intellect, and longevity are all directly influenced by where these planets sit in your birth chart and how they interact with each other.
The Navagraha Havan aims to placate the nine Grahas and lessen the negative impact of the planets on a person's life. Planets causing beneficial effects are strengthened, and planets causing bad impacts are calmed and neutralised.
Who Should Perform Navagraha Havan?
Anyone facing repeated failures, career obstacles, financial problems, marriage delays, health issues, or planetary doshas should consider performing this ritual.
It is also commonly performed before major life events, a wedding, a new business launch, a housewarming, or a career transition, as a way of beginning that chapter with balanced planetary energies.
The Nine Planets and What They Govern
Each of the nine Grahas rules over specific dimensions of your life:
- Surya (Sun): Health, authority, father, government relations
- Chandra (Moon): Mind, emotions, mother, mental peace
- Mangal (Mars): Courage, property, siblings, energy
- Budha (Mercury): Intelligence, communication, business, skin
- Brihaspati (Jupiter): Wisdom, children, wealth, spiritual growth
- Shukra (Venus): Marriage, love, luxury, artistic pursuits
- Shani (Saturn): Karma, discipline, longevity, delays
- Rahu: Foreign matters, ambition, sudden gains or losses
- Ketu: Spirituality, liberation, past karma, health of lower body
When any of these planets are weak, afflicted, or malefic in your Kundli, the areas they govern begin to show the strain.
Auspicious Time for Navagraha Havan
Auspicious days include Amavasya, Purnima, Shukla Paksha, Navratri, or astrologer-recommended dates based on your Kundli. Your BookMyPooja pandit will identify the most suitable Muhurat for your specific planetary situation.
Step-by-Step Navagraha Havan Ritual
1. Preparation and Purification The puja space is thoroughly cleaned. The Navagraha idols or images are arranged in their correct order: Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budha, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, and Ketu. A Navagraha Yantra or copper plate is placed on the altar along with all ritual items.
2. Sankalpam The devotee takes water in the right palm, states their name, gotra, the date (tithi), and the purpose of the Havan, then lets the water flow onto the ground.
3. Ganesh Puja Lord Ganesha is invoked first to remove all obstacles from the ritual and bless the ceremony with a clear, uninterrupted beginning.
4. Kalash Sthapana The Kalash is installed and the Navagrahas are formally called upon before the puja begins. The Kalash holds the collective divine presence throughout the ceremony.
5. Navagraha Puja and Abhishekam Each of the nine planets is invoked individually by chanting their respective mantras. Flowers, rice, turmeric, sandalwood paste, and specific coloured cloth are offered to each planet. The Abhishekam is then performed by pouring Panchamrit over the Navagraha idols, followed by a bath using Ganga Jal to symbolise purification.
6. Navagraha Havan Each type of Samidha (sacred wood) represents a specific planet and is offered during the Havan to appease those celestial bodies. The pandit chants each planet's Beej mantra and offers ghee and samagri into the sacred fire with each repetition. A minimum of 108 ahutis are made to each planetary deity.
7. Purnahuti: The final offering is made into the sacred fire, marking the formal conclusion of the Havan. All divine energies invoked are thanked and blessed upon the devotee.
8. Aarti The puja concludes with an Aarti before each of the nine deities.
9. Prasad Distribution and Dana Prasad is distributed among participants and family members. Donations and dakshina are offered to the priest, and food or grains are given to the needy as an act of charity to complete the karmic cycle.
