Dhanteras (Dhantrayodashi) 2025 – Date, Puja Time, Significance, and Rituals

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the first day of the five-day Diwali festival. It is celebrated as a day of wealth, health, and new beginnings, honoring both Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of prosperity, and Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and healing. Buying gold, silver, utensils, or initiating new ventures on this day is considered highly auspicious. In 2025, Dhanteras will be observed on Saturday, 18th October.

  • In many homes, Dhanvantari Puja is performed for health and immunity
  • Evening Lakshmi Puja sets the foundation for Diwali blessings, welcoming wealth and divine presence

Traditional Rituals of Dhanteras

1. House Cleaning and Decoration

  • Homes and business premises are cleaned and decorated with rangoli, marigold garlands, mango leaves, and oil lamps
  • Small footprints of Goddess Lakshmi are drawn at the entrance using rice paste or kumkum

2. Buying Metal or Valuables

  • Purchasing gold, silver, copper, utensils, or even electronic items is considered lucky
  • Even a small silver coin or brass diya purchased with devotion brings merit
  • Businesses often start new accounts or balance ledgers on this day

3. Dhanvantari Puja

  • Set up a simple altar with Lord Dhanvantari’s photo or idol, or a kalash filled with water, tulsi, coins, and herbs
  • Offer neem, tulsi, honey, ghee, and natural medicine items
  • Chant: “Om Dhanvantaraye Amritakalashastaya Namah”
  • This puja is especially recommended for healthcare professionals, elders, and those with chronic conditions

4. Lakshmi Puja in the Evening

  • After sunset, light 13 or 26 diyas at the entrance and throughout the home
  • Offer rice, lotus flowers, sweets, kumkum, and coins to Goddess Lakshmi
  • Chant Sri Suktam, Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali, or a simple Lakshmi aarti
  • Keep one diya burning overnight near the entrance or tulsi plant to symbolize continuous light and abundance
