Akshaya Tritiya 2026: Lakshmi-Vishnu Puja Vidhi at Home

Akshaya Tritiya 2026 is on April 19 and the puja muhurat runs from 10:49 AM to 12:21 PM. This guide covers everything families need to perform the complete Lakshmi-Vishnu puja at home: the full samagri list, how to set up the altar, the Sankalp, the correct offering sequence for Vishnu, Lakshmi and Kubera, the bhog specific to this Tithi, and why Annadanam carries more scriptural merit than any gold purchase. Ends with a direct booking prompt for families who want an experienced pandit for the full vidhi.

Every year around Akshaya Tritiya, the conversation naturally turns to gold. What to buy, where to buy it, whether now is a good time. And somewhere in that conversation, the puja quietly gets pushed aside. A quick prayer in the morning, a few flowers, and the family is off to the jeweller.

Akshaya Tritiya is one of only a handful of days in the Hindu calendar designated as a Swayam Siddha Muhurta, a self-aspicious moment that requires no further astrological alignment.

Akshaya Tritiya 2026 falls on Sunday, April 19. The Tritiya Tithi begins at 10:49 AM and the peak puja muhurat runs from 10:49 AM to 12:21 PM. Here is how to use that window fully.

Setting up the Altar: what you need and how to arrange it

Start from the night before. Clean your puja space thoroughly and lay a fresh yellow cloth on the raised platform (yellow is the colour specifically associated with Akshaya Tritiya, as it corresponds to Lord Vishnu and the abundance of Vaishakh). Place the idol or framed image of Lord Ganesha at the front left. Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi go at the centre, Lakshmi to Vishnu's left, always. If you wish to include Lord Kubera, the divine treasurer, place his image to the right.

You will need: Tulsi leaves mandatory for Vishnu puja, never substituted. Fresh yellow flowers for Vishnu. Fresh lotus or rose for Lakshmi. Sandalwood paste, kumkum, turmeric, and rice grains. A ghee lamp and incense. Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar). A Kalash filled with water, mango leaves, and a coconut. Ganhajal if available, a few drops in the Kalash and in your bath water in the morning. For bhog: Poha is specifically prescribed because of the Sudama-Krishna story on this Tithi. Sattu, cucumber, and chana dal are also traditional offerings for this day.

The morning before the muhurat

Wake during Brahma Muhurta (ideally between 4:30 and 6:00 AM). Take a bath with Gangajal mixed into your water. Wear fresh, clean clothes (new clothes if possible). Offer Arghya to Surya Dev, a copper vessel of water offered to the rising sun while facing east.

Sit quietly before the altar for a few minutes. This is the Dhyana. The Sankalp, which comes next, requires clarity of intention. Know what you are asking for before you ask for it.

The Sankalp
The Sankalp is the formal vow that opens the puja. Take water in your right palm, state your full name, your Gotra, and your specific intention for this puja, prosperity for the household, a new venture, the wellbeing of the family, or simply gratitude for what the year has brought. Release the water.
The Puja Vidhi

Begin with Ganesh Puja, Lord Ganesha first, always. Offer modak or wheat flour laddoos, kumkum, and akshat. Then move to the Lakshmi-Vishnu puja. Offer Panchamrit first, pour it over the Vishnu idol or sprinkle it before the image. Follow with tulsi leaves, sandalwood paste, yellow flowers for Vishnu, and lotus or rose for Lakshmi. Offer kumkum on Lakshmi's image, and a janeu to Vishnu.

Chant the Vishnu Sahasranama or repeat Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times. For Lakshmi, chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmyei Namaha or the Lakshmi Ashtottara. If you are worshipping Kubera, offer yellow flowers and chant Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadhipataye Namaha.

Offer the bhog, Poha, sattu, and fruits to the deities. Then perform the Aarti. Close with a prayer of gratitude and distribute Prasad.

Charity: the act named above all others

Before the day ends, give. The Puranic instruction on Akshaya Tritiya is unambiguous: Annadanam (donating food) and Vastradanam (donating clothing) carry more scriptural merit on this day than any purchase. Feed someone who is hungry. Donate to a cause you believe in. The word Akshaya means that which never diminishes. It is acts of giving, not acquiring, that carry the Akshaya quality forward into your life.

How a pandit can make a difference

The Sankalp wording, the correct sequence of offerings for each deity, the Vishnu Sahasranama recitation, and the Kubera invocation specific to Akshaya Tritiya, these are the layers that make the difference between a puja performed and a puja completed.
