What is Onnoprashon?
- The word Onnoprashon means “grain initiation” or “first rice feeding”
- The baby is fed a small quantity of sweet rice or kheer for the first time
- A puja is performed to invoke divine blessings before feeding
- After the feeding, the child is encouraged to pick from a set of symbolic items placed on a plate:
- Book or Pen – symbolizes wisdom and knowledge
- Gold – represents wealth
- Soil – indicates a future in land or real estate
- Food – shows qualities of generosity and empathy
The chosen item is believed to hint at the baby’s future inclination or destiny
When is Onnoprashon Performed?
- Ideally conducted in the 6th or 7th month after birth
- Date is chosen based on the baby’s Janma Nakshatra, Tithi, and family traditions
- Conducted on an auspicious day as per Bengali Panjika
