AksharabhyasamAksharabhyasam
Aksharabhyasam, also known as Vidyarambham in South India, is one of the most important 16 Hindu Sanskaras (Ṣoḍasha Samskāras). In Telugu culture, this sacred ritual is deeply respected and typically performed when the child reaches the age of 2 to 2.5 years. It marks the initiation of learning by making the child write their first letter, usually “Om” or a sloka, with the guidance and blessings of Lord Ganesha and Mata Saraswati.

What Is Aksharabhyasam?
The word ‘Akshara’ means letters (alphabets), and ‘Abhyasam’ means practice. So, Aksharabhyasam means "practicing letters". This beautiful ritual introduces the child to the world of knowledge and wisdom and is considered the first step toward formal education. In Andhra and Telangana, families take great pride in performing this ceremony with traditional rituals, prayers, and involvement of the elders.
Best Days for Performing Aksharabhyasam
In Telugu households, muhurtham (auspicious time) is very important. Some of the most auspicious days to perform Aksharabhyasam include:
- Vasanta Panchami (dedicated to Saraswati Devi)
- Vijaya Dashami / Dussehra (symbol of victory over ignorance)
- Saraswati Pooja Day during Navaratri
- Guru Pournami
- Shravana Pournami
- Ugadi (Telugu New Year)
Any other Shubha Muhurtham as suggested by a knowledgeable Telugu pandit
Consulting with a Vedic Telugu pandit ensures the best timing based on your child’s birth star (Janma Nakshatram) and family traditions.
Benefits of Aksharabhyasam in Telugu Tradition
- Receives blessings from Sri Saraswati Devi, the goddess of learning, and Sri Vinayaka, the remover of obstacles.
- Helps in the child’s intellectual and emotional development.
- Instills a sense of discipline, devotion, and respect for knowledge from an early age.
- Brings positive energy and sets the foundation for a bright academic future.
What Happens During the Ceremony?
A clean slate or rice tray is prepared.
- The child is made to write the first letter (often "Om" or “Sri”) with the help of elders.
- Slokas and mantras are chanted for the child’s health, wisdom, and overall well-being.
- Offerings are made to Saraswati Devi, usually including books, pens, and educational items placed in front of the deity.
- The family seeks divine blessings and the elders give Aashirwadam (blessings) to the child.
