This ritual celebrates motherhood, invokes divine blessings for the mother and the unborn child, and prepares the family for welcoming new life into the world.
Ritual Significance of Seemantham
Seemantham is performed with a series of Vedic mantras and homams that infuse the home and the womb with sacred vibrations. The Udaka Shanti mantras, in particular, are believed to protect the womb and enhance the baby's intellectual and spiritual growth.
The ceremony also involves blessings from elders, and is often accompanied by Valakappu (bangle ceremony) and Poochudal (flower shower), expressing joy and prayers for the child’s safe arrival.
Ritual Procedure
- Punyahavachanam for purification of space and energy
- Ganapathy Pooja to remove obstacles
- Kalasha Sthapanam and Udaka Shanti chanting to energize the environment and water
- Abhishekam of the mother using sanctified Kalasha water
- Homams to invoke blessings of Lakshmi and well-being of the child
- Poochudal – showering flowers over the mother
- Valakappu – adorning the mother’s hands with glass and gold bangles from the women in the family
- Offering of fruits, sweets, and turmeric rice as prasad
The mother is traditionally dressed in a bright silk saree, seated in a decorated area, surrounded by her mother, in-laws, relatives, and well-wishers.
