The pooja involves chanting, bhajans, and lighting of ghee lamps, and is often performed in homes or community spaces where devotees gather to seek blessings from Swamy Ayyappa, the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini (incarnation of Lord Vishnu).
Purpose and Spiritual Significance
The main purpose of this pooja is to cultivate self-control, mental strength, and humility. It is believed that Ayyappa Swamy purifies one’s karma, removes inner negativities, and gives protection from planetary afflictions — especially Shani Dosham.
The devotee performs the pooja with full focus on bhakti, renouncing luxuries and pleasures, and following a simple satvik lifestyle during the viratham period.
Ritual Procedure
- The pooja begins with the invocation of Swamy Ayyappa by chanting powerful mantras
- Namaavalis, Ashtothram, and 108 namas are recited with devotion
- Bhajans and keerthanais are sung in praise of Lord Ayyappa and other deities
- A Padi Pooja is performed with ghee lamps arranged in steps (18 Padis) representing the path to Sabarimala
- Naivedyam (offering) like Aravana Payasam is prepared and offered
- Devotees light multiple deepams and chant “Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa” with full devotion
- Vadhyar leads the rituals with proper chanting, slokas, and explanations
When to Perform Ayyappa Swamy Pooja?
- Ideally done during the Mandala Kalam (Nov-Dec), especially from Vrischikam 1st for 41 to 48 days
- Can also be performed during Ayyappa Viratham period, or on Saturdays to reduce Shani afflictions
- Muhurtham may be selected for home poojas based on Janma Nakshatra or Shani pacification
