AksharabhyasamAksharabhyasam
Aksharabhyasam, also known as Vidyarambham, is one of the sixteen Sanskaras (Ṣoḍasha Saṃskāras) that mark important milestones in a Hindu's life. In Tamil tradition, this ceremony introduces the child to the world of letters and learning, seeking blessings from Goddess Saraswati and Lord Ganesha. It is usually performed when the child turns two or two-and-a-half years old.

This sacred occasion symbolizes the child’s readiness to begin formal education and marks the first act of writing in their life.
Ritual Process and Cultural Significance
The ceremony begins with Ganapathi Puja and Saraswati Archana, followed by a homam. The child is seated on a parent's lap, and with the guidance of a Tamil Vadhyar, writes the first letter—typically “அ” or “ஓம்”—on a rice-filled plate or slate.
The priest chants mantras that invoke intelligence, speech, and memory. The presence of elders and family members, who shower blessings and participate in the ritual, adds emotional and spiritual depth to the ceremony.
Traditional attire is worn by everyone involved. Boys typically wear veshti and sattai, while girls wear pattu pavadai. The setting is adorned with fresh flowers, banana stems, and kalashas to reflect the sanctity and beauty of Tamil customs.
