According to Hindu traditions, Antima Samskara is the last of the 16 Samskaras, which are significant life-cycle rituals. Performing the Uttara Kriya with devotion ensures that the departed soul is guided towards salvation (moksha) and receives the blessings of ancestors.

Uttara Kriya Rituals and Their Importance

  1. Immediately After Death

    • A Purohit (priest) who specializes in Apara Kriya is called to initiate the required rituals at home.
    • The body is then taken to the cremation ground, where last rites, including Homa (fire ritual) and Daanam (donations), are performed.
    • The body is cremated either using traditional wood pyres or an electric cremation system.
  2. Collection of Asthi (Ashes)

    • The Asti (ashes of the departed) are collected on the 2nd or 3rd day from the cremation site.
    • These ashes are later immersed in sacred rivers like the Ganga, Kaveri, or Godavari, as per the family's tradition.
  3. Nitya Karma Vidhis (Day 3 to Day 9)

    • Daily rituals are performed at home or a dedicated hall to offer prayers for the soul’s peaceful journey.
    • Food is offered to Brahmins and Pitru Tarpanam (ancestral water offerings) is performed.
  4. 10th-Day Ceremonies

    • Special Shanti Homas and Gnati Tarpanam (offering prayers to lineage ancestors) are conducted.
    • Vedic Aaradhane (sacred chanting) is performed by priests, and donations are made.
  5. 11th-Day Rituals

    • Rudra Japam (chanting of Rudram) is performed by a minimum of 4 and up to 11 priests.
    • Ekodishta Shraddha and Aama Shodasha Kumbha Shraddha are performed for purification and transition of the soul.
  6. 12th-Day – Sapindi Karana Shraddha

    • This is a significant ceremony where the soul is united with the ancestors in Pitru Loka.
    • A priest performs the Karya (ritual), and donations (danam) are made to Brahmins.
  7. 13th-Day – Masika Shraddha (Monthly Ancestral Rites)

    • A special ritual is conducted to ensure ongoing blessings from ancestors.
    • This is the beginning of monthly Shraddha rituals that continue for a year.
  8. 14th-Day – Vaikunta Samaradhana

    • This grand ceremony is performed for eternal peace (Vaikunta Prapti) of the departed soul.
    • Priests chant Vedic Parayanam, and significant donations (Daanam) are made.
