The Shradh ceremony can be conducted in two ways:

  • Hiranya Shradh (simplified offering)
  • Shradh with Havan (including fire rituals for purification)

Significance of Shradh

  • It is performed annually on the same Tithi (lunar day) on which the soul departed.
  • Helps in fulfilling the obligations toward ancestors and securing their blessings.
  • Ensures peace and liberation (Moksha) for the departed souls.

Shradh Ceremony Procedure

  1. Vishwadev Sthapana Pujan – Invoking the universal deities to bless the rituals.
  2. Pinda Pradan – Offering of Pinda (rice balls) mixed with ghee, honey, sugar, milk, and curd to the ancestors. This offering symbolizes nourishment for their souls.
  3. Tarpan – Offering water mixed with black sesame seeds (Til) to satisfy and please the departed souls.
  4. Brahman Bhojan – Feeding Brahmins is an essential part of Shradh, as it is believed to directly reach the ancestors.

The entire Shradh ceremony typically takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the rituals involved.
